The web site for CopyScape (http://www.copyscape.com/) is owned by Indigo Stream Technologies, founded by Gideon Greenspan, and is located at 57/63 Line Wall Road, Gibraltar. The island nation in the Mediterranean. We feel this web site is full of the usual bull shit designed to lure the unsuspecting and the unknowledgeable web site owner into thinking this site offers the real deal when actually all it offers is another way to waste your money. According to Wikipedia, CopyScape has actually been used to document copying in some federal court cases, but then, no one knows who provided that information to Wikipedia. It could have been Gideon Greenspan. We think Google could h ave been used to do the same searches. Big deal. But wait. CopyScape does use Google:

Copyscape uses Google and Yahoo! as search providers, under agreed terms.

Let us see, plagiarism is when you copy someone else's work and claim it as your own. We do not do that. Whew. So what good are they? Some people think CopyScape is good for policing for copyright infringement. That seems to be the actual intent here. Is it not, Gideon? But it all comes down to one basic thing. If you have content that is worth protecting then you take the time to register it with the US Copyright Office first. Then, should someone copy it illegally, you have recourse in court including statutory damages and legal fees.

Using these companies is for the paranoid webbies who see content thieves hiding around every data stream. Is just is not so. But it makes for a great revenue stream for companies like this.
