The Tabberone™ Archives
These articles concern what we consider major trademark and copyright issues. They are usually reproduced with the original source referenced. Bear in mind, these articles are copyrighted and commercial use without permission of the authors may be considered infringement. The intended use here is educational, commentary and non-commercial. The reason they are reproduced in the Tabberone™ Archives, as opposed to just providing a link, is because links disappear and pages are removed. That presents a messy confirmation process that is annoying to the browser (you) but also presents a credibility issue. We do not claim any rights in these pieces. Do not regard the absence of a copyright statement or © to mean the article is not copyrighted. Some sites do not have a copyright statement.

When an article or a comment is posted on the internet by the copyright owner, the owner is seeking a world-wide, 24/7 audience; sometimes for a limited amount of time, sometimes indefinitely. In essence, an internet posting intentionally relinquishes one's copyright for exclusivity because the owner has posted it on the internet to been seen by everyone, everywhere. The Tabberone™ Archives non-commercial duplication of the posting is simply a continuance of the original wishes of the copyright owner. We post these articles for reference, for commentary and for confirmarion of our position.

Haaahahahahahahaaaa~!

Pick me up off the floor!

This is the stupidest thing I've every heard from eBay!!!

You remember my Origami Boulder auction for the OTWA2 Off the Wall Auctions game? The one for a wad of paper?

There is a website called the Origami Boulder Company. They VeRO'd my auction! eBay is granting intellectual property rights on their site to a wad of freaking paper!

Here is the item:

This is the description:

quote:

Although Toy Ranch's Modernist strategies as a sculptor have been widely discussed, it is important to stress his Japanese side, partly in light of his impact on Japanese artists. It is fascinating to note how myopic and exclusively Western early criticism of Toy Ranch was. Sam Greenberg, the chief culprit, appears in hindsight laughably obtuse: “The paper Toy Ranch favors for his ambitious efforts strikes me, also, as being inappropriate to his ideas, most of which seem to demand metal or wood.”

Six years later, the Japanese art critic Yoshi Iuni lavishly praised Toy's use of paper as a paramount virtue. TR’s works were not works of human art called sculpture, but paper itself revealing the existence of nature: paper as condensed essence of nature.

Thus, just as critics of Toy Ranch have held widely divergent opinions, as far afield as Osaka and New York, so TR’s works in Origami have also elicited strong negative and positive opinions. Looking back, it appears that both extremes may have had some limited justification.

More to the point, art critic R.M. Candell wrote two long articles on Origami Boulder, one chronicling the artist's futile efforts to manipulate the project to his own benefit and another expressing disappointment in the completed work in words that would be echoed by East Coast art critics Harriet Sielie and Harry W. Thalacker. Candell felt Origami Boulder's simplicity and innocence were violated by the space. It is like a child abandoned by a parent. There is not enough of anything in it.

It appears to Thalacker more “technological [and] Constructivist.” Origami Boulder may represent “a single, infinitesimally tiny primitive being in the process of dividing into two parts,” but Thalacker also suggests human heads or ceramic vessels as interpretations, as well as a highly telling suggestion of “parent and child playfully nuzzling one another.” A further, obliquely psychological analysis captures the primal core of Toy Ranch’s vision, “A child’s dream and hopes remained, pure and always fresh."

Medium: Paper (2 pieces)
